How do you decide which pages to add to define your new direction for dietitians? Which do you delete? Can you summarise sections or have the manual get longer but less useful? Above all a manual has to be user friendly with pages that say all that needs to be said for those investigating diet. It does not have explanations of why you have altered your work, but your user of the manual hopes you have thought well before making updates. I have just updated my manual for diet investigation of … [Read more...]
Interesting tyramine reactions
Tummy pain on a healthy diet Hi. I have serious tummy problems and believe I have a dairy intolerance. However my tummy ( and wheezing) gets worse when I eliminate dairy and eat a ‘healthy’ diet of lots of fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts and avocados and dark chocolate. I don’t eat meat but do eat fish. I’m beginning to wonder whether I have a problem with amines? Could you suggest an elimination diet or any advice? Thank you x Dear Rebecca, When we eliminate some food we … [Read more...]
Diet and Mental Health in Children
Sometimes we read articles that highlight one, or just a few aspects of diet and mental health, so maybe one gets emphasised as a necessary nutritional addition to what is thought of as good nutrition in children at that time. We may even see it translated into a product such as HiQbread with added essential fatty acids [EFAs]. Reading the article "Diet and Mental Health in Children" by D Tomlinson, H Wilkinson & P Wilkinson, in Child and Adolescent Health Vol 14, No 3, 2009 148 … [Read more...]

Flavour matters in wine, why not in carrots?
If we are wine buffs we just know that the flavour matters. If we are not wine buffs we may think the wine lovers rather overemphasize the whole idea! Does flavour matter as much where other foods are concerned? We are all familiar with carrots that have a strong flavour. We may taste them during preparation and notice the strong flavour and hope it goes away with cooking. It doesn’t. Even if you add a little sugar it does not mask that strong flavour. Gourmet chefs on TV programs are bringing … [Read more...]
Letter to the Australian Healthy Food Guide magazine Feb 2015
Dear Editor, It is true that sugar does not make kids hyperactive, but that is not the whole story. Research into whether foods high in additive colour and flavour caused hyperactivity did show that they did not cause hyperactivity. But… the same studies did show in the double-blind placebo controlled trials that some children did react. The best way to look at this question is to say that diet factors, such as additive colour and flavour, make the symptoms worse in some children whose … [Read more...]
Gaps in the research on diet and ADHD – how dietitians can fill the current research needs
A 2012 State-of-the-Art Review article on diet and behaviour recommends just a healthy diet for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However there is sufficient research available to say a diet free of additive colours, flavours and some preservatives has a role in some of children with ADHD. The best summary is to say that diet factors “aggravate the underlying disorder in susceptible people”. My aim has been to contribute to diet and ADHD thinking. The reactions are … [Read more...]
