A delicate matter. Frequent thrush infections happen often enough to be noted among symptoms food sensitive people have. An important part of this idea is that the thrush infection itself can produce the usual symptoms the person has, just as bacterial or viral infections do. It is upsetting to have to deal with the discomfort of the thrush infection as well as having ongoing changes in mood, self-confidence or clear thinking. I have seen patients whose thrush solved on the elimination diet … [Read more...]
Rash around the mouth
Hi Joan, My 15-month old daughter has been suffering from a rash around her mouth ever since she started solids. We have seen an immunologist as my daughter also has a fish allergy (hives and vomiting after ingestion, positive on RAST test and skin prick test). The immunologist wasn't too concerned about the rash and thinks it is eczema. He thinks dairy might be contributing and said to still include dairy but limit. We are using cortisone, moisturisers and barrier creams and the rash may … [Read more...]
Burp relief for unusual symptoms
Dear Joan, thanks for your books and this site, which my dietitian put me onto. I have established that salicylates and many amines have a negative impact on me and see many of my symptoms described here on the blog. Which is reassuring somehow that I am not alone. However one I do not see mentioned and which disturbs me the most (perhaps because no one else has mentioned it) is an odd congestion I get in the upper neck and throat and face. The sensation is like my throat is swelling and the … [Read more...]
Coffee, nausea and vertigo
Lately coffee has been making me very sick too. After just a sip I get nauseaus and then if I drink a few sips more I get a bad case of vertigo. Needless to say I avoid it now that I've discovered the source of my vertigo attacks. Have you ever heard of this? I have lots of food intolerances (wheat, oats, rye, barley, malt, yeast, soy) that usually cause me to have extreme fatigue, congestion, sore throat and overall sick feeling. Dear Andrea, Nausea and bad vertigo with coffee is very … [Read more...]
Chronic fatigue and food sensitivity
I will always remember the father who said that, within 10 minutes of giving his son a strawberry milkshake, he could see his son’s whole system speed up, and he “could... feel... his... brain... slowing ...down”. This was the beginning of my realization that food could cause hyperactivity in one family member and hypo-activity in another. Having food producing opposite effects is not as unusual as you might think. We know that foods (milk is the best example) can produce diarrhoea in one child, … [Read more...]
Bad breath is very distressing
By accident I discovered bad breath, and how to reduce it, in a particular group of people. As a dietitian I helped people who suspected they were having adverse reactions to food investigate their diet. They often suspected they, or their children, reacted to foods high in additives, rich food, chocolate, herbs and spices, acidic fruit, or monosodium glutamate [MSG]. Over time I realized that suspect foods were usually high in flavour. The symptoms they often had included eczema and other … [Read more...]
High Blood Pressure & Diet
Question: There is so much I wish to share about the food sensitivities my mother has. But what I want to share is her escalating issues with blood pressure problems after certain chemical exposures, mostly fragrance related, but also the anestia propofol. She becomes incoherent, she gets tremors and her blood pressure shoots to well over 200. She has been hospitalized a dozen times over the past year and a half. She gave the prescribed BP medications a chance for nearly a year, but they … [Read more...]
