Evidence base for food sensitivity
There are two important parts to the evidence for the low additives and natural chemicals elimination diet when beginning diet investigation for suspected food intolerance. See the attached articles for detail on this complex issue. Basic research We need to remember that we are dealing with adverse reactions to foods or food chemicals that most people tolerate. So the early research was experimenting with just what to exclude at the same time as doing double-blind placebo-controlled … [Read more...]
Amine diet investigation
The following guidelines are provided where amines, particularly tyramine, are suspect in headaches, migraines or other food sensitivity symptoms. Amines should not be the only exclusions since where they cause reactions other food chemicals are also likely to also be a problem. These include additive colours, flavours, preservatives, monosodium glutamate, and natural salicylates. So diet investigation should begin with a low chemical elimination diet such as that outlined in Are You Food … [Read more...]
Question from Kelly
Question: I’ve found this site really interesting. I think I have a tyramine sensitivity, but I have never met anyone with the exact symptoms as me. After eating something high in Tyramines, I wake up in a confused state from sleeping. I am panicked, my heart is racing and it takes about 5-10 minutes for me to get back to reality. I’ve worked out that figs, aubergines, over ripe bananas, gravy powder are dangerous for me, and I am still learning what else is. It is very frightening waking up in … [Read more...]
Which elimination diet should you begin with?
Sugar free? Additive free? Yeast free? Wheat free? Milk free? Low FODMAPS? Amine free? Low salicylate? No MSG? All suspect food chemicals [salicylates, amines, glutamates]? The blood group diet? When we think about it we realize that we cut foods out of our diet to see what foods we should cut out of our diet! In fact no one knows exactly what elimination diet we should begin with as each person has their particular sensitivities. The diet you need is the diet you find by doing diet … [Read more...]
Food Intolerance exists !
What is food intolerance? It is the name we give any adverse reaction to a food or food additive that is not due to an allergy. Food intolerance is the body’s reaction to various chemicals in food such that an adverse reaction occurs. Reactions occur in a variety of parts of the body. We can say that food sensitivity is a multisystem disorder. This means that the symptoms can occur in any of the body systems: whether the skin, the lungs, the digestive system or others. Target organ … [Read more...]
Food additives that cause reactions
What are the food additives and natural chemicals considered suspect in Australia, UK, USA, and Canadian research? Artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, some added natural colours, as well as naturally occurring salicylates, amines and monosodium glutamate. Many researchers exclude perfumes. Here I want to share some findings about added colours and flavours from over 20 years of practice in this area. The detail is presented in my thesis and in my book “Are you food sensitive?” I … [Read more...]
