Detail of tyramine and other amines in food

August 17, 2011 by Joan Breakey   Article

Considered here are those amines found in foods and in the body: TyramineThe most often researched as it is implicated in reactions in people on MAOI medication. Tyramine is produced from the amino acid tyrosine, particularly that present in the dairy protein, casein. It is developed during cheese making by bacteria with decarboxylase enzymes. As Reactions in people on MAOI’s have been assumed to be due to the para Tyramine [p-TA] it has been analysed, but the meta form has also been reported … [Read more...]

Amine diet investigation

August 17, 2011 by Joan Breakey   Article

The following guidelines are provided where amines, particularly tyramine, are suspect in headaches, migraines or other food sensitivity symptoms. Amines should not be the only exclusions since where they cause reactions other food chemicals are also likely to also be a problem. These include additive colours, flavours, preservatives, monosodium glutamate, and natural salicylates. So diet investigation should begin with a low chemical elimination diet such as that outlined in Are You Food … [Read more...]

Unusual tyramine reaction

August 17, 2011 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Karen Murphy says: February 17, 2011 at 12:20 pm After years of suffering from debilitating migraines and sever nausea with vomiting, I have finally found some great information regarding migraines, cyclic vomiting syndrome and the link to tyramine. I wish I new this 10 years ago. Only if you know me and have actually observed an “episode”, no one ever believed me. Not my doctors, employers or friends. I would wake up in the middle of the night with severe nausea and a bad “headache”. Vomiting … [Read more...]

Question from Kelly

August 17, 2011 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Question: I’ve found this site really interesting. I think I have a tyramine sensitivity, but I have never met anyone with the exact symptoms as me. After eating something high in Tyramines, I wake up in a confused state from sleeping. I am panicked, my heart is racing and it takes about 5-10 minutes for me to get back to reality. I’ve worked out that figs, aubergines, over ripe bananas, gravy powder are dangerous for me, and I am still learning what else is. It is very frightening waking up in … [Read more...]

Question from Julian

August 17, 2011 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Question: Like others my, self-made Food-Diary showed a direct link between food and mood, and I have had the same reaction from the medical profession. 1990 to 2010 being told ‘Its all in your mind’ or ‘Your normal’ but only in the last 4 weeks of me getting angry with Dr’s has anyone done anything and have recently started an MAOI, which, in theory, may help. I have found the ideal solution is a total exclusion diet for 48-72 hrs, but as this isn’t practical I have to eat and put up with the … [Read more...]
