What recipes should be in a low tyramine cookbook? The important question is what foods and ingredients do you need to leave out of the recipes. This is not as simple as it sounds. But I will tell you how to make it simple for just you with your individual needs. What foods is tyramine in? Cinnamon: can coumarin cause toxic reactions?
A thoughtful subscriber asked this question. We all want to know exactly what is causing reactions like knowing that the lactose in milk can cause bloating. Unfortunately where food sensitivity is concerned there are many unknown unknowns. You can see how complicated it is by reading my presentation on this very topic, "Known Unknowns" for Ockham's Razor available here. I certainly have met many people who were putting a teaspoonful of cinnamon on their breakfast and who had quite severe IBS … [Read more...]
Unusual tyramine reaction
Len’s story of his very unusual reaction: My tyramine symptoms came on me right out of the blue. I am a 68 yr old male and the last 2 years I suffered with gastritis and stomach ulcers brought on by taking aspirin, which is supposed to doctor recommended. To deal with the ulcers the physicians wanted me on PPI but after suffering side effects for one week from the medication plus reading up on long term side effects I decided to punt the pills and address the problem through diet. Amines in peanuts when roasted
Kate sent a comment: Peanuts (and all nuts) are high in amines when roasted, so it makes sense for an amine sensitive people to react to them. My reply: Dear Kate, Yes, amines change with roasting. It may also depend on the amount of roasting so you can test different brands. The amazing thing about amines is that individuals vary in just which they … [Read more...]
Tyramine sensitivity update

Kent writes “I have read a sampling of the comments on this page [in the Blogs] and I see quite a few people who state that they are sensitive to tyramine but that they do not get migraines. They then describe symptoms which are typical of migraines! I think most people have the misunderstanding that migraines = headaches. But migraines present a blanket of … [Read more...]
Tyramine and high BP
Comment from Patty Woods I too have discovered over the last two years or so that I have become intolerant to tyramine. I am a 60 year old female. It all seemed to start very suddenly, but I have for the last 15 years or so had other food sensitivities. I really suspect my over-use of Zyrtec. Cannot prove it and my doctors will not agree with me, but I used Zyrtec for about 15 years for allergies, and at one point every time I tried to stop taking it I had worse issues, I would break out in … [Read more...]
