December 28, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Managing your diet better is a good New Year’s resolution. Have your symptoms been bothering you? Do you have a plan to really control them better?  Here are some easy ways to achieve what you want. Have you cut out some foods, and then a few more, but not had good enough results? This might be the time to take yourself through the diet detective process. The known unknowns of food sensitivity

December 3, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

Food sensitivity is complex. There are known knows and and probably unknown unknowns! Can we cope with what looks complex in science. I presented a talk on this topic on ABC radio on 3rd Dec 2017. See  http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/ockhamsrazor/food-sensitivity-and-the-known-unknowns/9185042  You can see I do have some optimism  the future. … [Read more...]

Diet for Candida

September 21, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

I am often asked what is the right diet for Candida infection? It is important to know that candida is a yeast but not the yeast we use in breadmaking. It is a completely different type of yeast that grows the little white stuff that can be seen where the infection is visible, such as when it infects the mouth. Yeast for bread is a different shape. Both these yeasts belong to the biological family of fungi, so that is why anti-fungal medicines can be used successfully against for candida, or any … [Read more...]

Should you go on a gluten-free diet?

June 14, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

If you suspect wheat as a possible cause of your symptoms should you exclude it? What if others say they feel better on a gluten-free diet, or an alternative practitioner suggests it? First, consider what symptoms you have.  If you have gut discomfort or IBS, excluding gluten may help. But first have your symptoms checked by a doctor. Even if you went on a gluten-free diet and it helped a bit, that would be no use if, underneath that, you had some serious problem growing. Many people use the … [Read more...]

Diet recommended by reviewers is not useful

March 2, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

What would you think about a diet that did not exclude chocolate, coloured lollies, soy sauce, mint, or acidic fruit, as a good first step for food sensitivity symptoms? A group of researchers provide a suggested diet that did not exclude these, after researching the just the food additive benzoate, sulphites, MSG, salicylates and vaso-active amines, each on their own. Does this matter? Yes it does as this is the latest review of the low chemical diet we use in Australia, when investigating … [Read more...]

Yummy Commercial Foods to try

February 8, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

Are you looking for some yummy new commercial foods for the low chemical diet? Have you found the Danone Ultimate yoghurt? It is plain nicely sweetened yoghurt with no added flavour. What about the Menz Caramel Honeycomb? It is like the old Violet Crumble but has no chocolate covering! It does have a little natural colour and flavour and 322, but I am suggesting no more than one each day. Store in the fridge for extra chilled delight. What about the Mini Meringue drops from WW Select? They have … [Read more...]

Gut bacteria: how much do we know about our microbiome?

November 12, 2016 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Understanding our gut bacteria is being discussed in relation to many problems of the gut and even in other parts of the body. An American dietitian with a special interest in what is happening in the gut, especially in irritable bowel syndrome, has an update. Her take-away message is “this science is new, evolving and individual.” She uses the idea I applied to our individual way of metabolising food chemicals. Where I spoke of our “metabolic fingerprint” in all that happens after chemicals … [Read more...]
