Eat out but be assertive

October 25, 2019 by Joan Breakey   Blog

In some ways it is becoming harder to manage food away from home. More food is already marinaded or the chips are already coated with a beer batter. More salads include rocket and other bitter lettuces. There is more recognition of the need for wheat-free foods but those foods are more highly flavoured. It is harder where you have to eat food provided away from home for more than a couple of days. It can be done by being assertive when ordering your meals. You do have to be clear about exactly … [Read more...]

A new natural Chicken Noodle Soup. Support it!

August 18, 2019 by Joan Breakey   Blog

We expect Chicken Noodle soups to be full of MSG or HVP. The LaZuppa Natural soup in a bowl should be tolerated by all! It contains stock (water, onion, carrot, chicken, celery, salt), vegetables (sweet corn, carrot, onion, cabbage, potato) and Rice Noodles. It does not contain much of any ingredient as it is a thin soup. The mild flavour is probably derived from the special way Asian recipes prepare the chicken. I have not had a chicken soup I have been prepared to recommend in the last 40 … [Read more...]

Glutamates: are they as bad as MSG?

May 29, 2019 by Joan Breakey   Article

Are there new items on the ingredient lists that may cause reactions but do not have numbers, so they are not being watched? The Woolworths Original Rice Crackers taste as if they have a savoury salt but the label has "no added MSG". It does contain Maltodextrin from Corn with the usual ingredients of rice, sunflower oil and antioxidant 319. But after the ingredient list it then prints “may contain naturally occurring glutamates”. Another potentially useful product: the Woolworths canned … [Read more...]

Eating away from home

April 5, 2019 by Joan Breakey   Article

In the real world you are likely to travel to a big city and need to manage your diet while eating out with relations or friends. Try to plan accommodation that includes a microwave oven. The hardest part is managing the restaurant meals. You have to stress no herbs or spice in your main meal, and plan to avoid, or decide to test any dish with a creamy sauce, as it may contain a little wine. Then you have to remember to ask for vegetable side dishes without dressing, as Balsamic vinegar and … [Read more...]

Low chemical food choices on a cruise

March 17, 2018 by Joan Breakey   Article

On cruise ships I kept hoping the soup cooks do not talk to the dessert cooks, or to the fish cooks either! The soups available on a cruise have been made in traditional ways, as there are lots of fresh bones from meat dishes to make delicious fresh-tasting stock used for meat and vegetable soups, so most of the soups can be eaten daily on a low chemical diet, low in dairy and wheat as well. As usual on a cruise it is frustrating to see the wide variety of food available but not be able to … [Read more...]

US Dietitians Discussing Food Sensitivities

November 5, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Blog

In the July/August 2017 issue of the USA Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics' Food & Nutrition Magazine featured an article exploring the existence of non-allergic adverse reaction to foods and the debate over what to do about it.  You can view the article here. I wrote to the editor of the magazine supporting this new direction for dietitians, as dietitians are the profession best equipped to build on what is know to take on this challenge.  My letter was featured in the … [Read more...]

Tyramine sensitivity still unrecognised

September 7, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Comment from Ryan. S: I’m a nurse and have been having sort-of hypertensive crises for approximately one year. I became tremulous, nauseous and an erratic heartbeat although my pulse stayed relatively normal. Thank you for your insight into this issue. As I write now, I have just experienced another one of these episodes, though not as bad as the episode that landed me in the ER last week. I have been to the ER 3x in the last few months with these episodes. I have been put on … [Read more...]
