Sport, does red cordial increase speed?

June 19, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Where people are sensitive to food chemicals red cordial does increase activity. The following ideas help explain how and why it can be useful, or if it produces more problems than benefits. Usually I am writing about food chemical intolerance as a problem. In the general population foods suspect for causing reactions are those which are sought after as they are enjoyable and stimulating. These include foods high in additives, spicy foods, acidic fruit, peppermint, teas, herbal preparations, … [Read more...]

Baby fragile but no medical problem

May 22, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

“What if my baby is looking fragile but doctors find nothing wrong?” A mother asked. I had a little 12 months-old patient who was otherwise well but not gaining enough weight. We went through the Family Sensitivity History and used it to help with the process of diet investigation so removed all the usual suspect foods. It seemed strange to the family to exclude some foods where the aim was to have the child eat more. But they were encouraged to eat as much as he wanted of the safe foods. It was … [Read more...]

Sleep problems can be important symptoms

April 24, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

One lady wrote: “I have had chronic insomnia for 30+ years which has worsened in the last 12-18 months. I have found a clear link between certain foods and drinks containing preservatives and being awake till 5 am in the morning. I discovered a dietitian who helped me with a low chemical elimination diet and food challenges. I am finding that salicylates also have a significant effect. I have been amazed at how my sleep has improved, for the first time in 30 years. I am very interested in this … [Read more...]

Nausea

March 10, 2019 by Joan Breakey   Article

Nausea in food sensitive people is a mystery as it often seems to come for a while and go away for a while for no reason that is related to other symptoms or a food you may feel is a cause. It is important as means you do not feel well. It happens most in those with IBS. People describe “feeling off”, feeling “bad” or feeling like having a rest and hoping to get some sleep and wake with it gone away. In some it may be connected to motion sickness which makes it worse. It affects your appetite as … [Read more...]

Have a no-fail Pavlova at Christmas

December 15, 2018 by Joan Breakey   Article

It makes sense to use Christmas to test out your tolerance in some way. Test what you really like as, if you are lucky and tolerate it, you will have a treat you really like even if you are careful about other foods. Or you can test one type of food chemical and see how much you can manage. For salicylates test some of the just beautiful fruit available. Mangoes and nectarines and watermelon are lower risk, then work up to other stone fruit and cherries, then Christmas cake and Christmas mince … [Read more...]

Underweight is often a problem in food sensitive people

August 12, 2018 by Joan Breakey   Article

ADHD children are often thin. Adults who are food sensitive are much more often underweight than overweight. Since your tolerance of suspect food is less with underweight the first priority is to ensure that sufficient food is included to maintain normal weight. There is a difference between being "wiry" and "too thin"! To obtain sufficient energy, all meals and snacks need to be included. Make sure main meal foods are included first. Plan meals so that some food is included every three … [Read more...]

Babies are food gourmets who can’t talk

July 26, 2017 by Joan Breakey   Article

Imagine you had to feed a friend who was a food gourmet but who for some reason, could not talk. You would try to imagine all the aspects of food that may make a difference to his enjoyment so you could get it right. You would think how discriminating your friend would be about the quality of the food, its taste, appearance, aroma, presentation, and so on. Now imagine this person is your baby. When we watch chefs describe the importance of getting the flavour, crispness, blending of textures, … [Read more...]
