Make diet easier

January 31, 2021 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Research shows that families often say they are not using diet any more after using diet for a few years. On further questioning they are still careful about many things, but have found enough foods they like. That is the trick! Gradually find some allowed biscuits, sandwich fillings, main meals and desserts that suit your family lifestyle.Obtain help from wherever you can. Ask older folk about plain family fare. Discuss diet with other people using diet. Use plain recipe books often from … [Read more...]

Are emulsifiers harmful?

January 16, 2021 by Joan Breakey   Blog

I heard of a gastroenterologist who told patients to avoid emulsifiers. This is wrong and fortunately there is one easy thing you can do to minimise emulsifier intake. The idea was based on only one study of effects on mice reporting that emulsifiers may affect thickness of the gut mucous lining, gut flora and other gut changes.According to food law in Australia, managed by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) additives may be only added to food in the amounts allowed. I requested … [Read more...]

“Toughen up!” Feeling pain

January 3, 2021 by Joan Breakey   Blog

“Why don’t you toughen up?” Do food sensitive people feel more or less pain? Children encouraged to toughen up often have siblings who do, in fact, feel less pain. The idea that the amount of pain food sensitive people feel is different, that is more or less than others, took years of my work to develop. What first showed clearly was that pain perception did not relate to the amount of physical change, was the distress in children with reflux. When the oesophagus was viewed by paediatricians it … [Read more...]

December 21, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Will you do daring or careful testing over Christmas? You might be lucky. Temperature sensitivity is no joke!

December 4, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

You may be teased if you want more or less covering than others. But having a body that changes quickly with even a small change in temperature can mean you feel the distress of being overheated, or feel far too cold. People often do no believe you can have your driving experience upset by air flow that is no bother to them. Or you notice a draught of air from a window open at night that others insist is closed. If your child is temperature sensitive you will learn to carry more clothes when the … [Read more...]

November 21, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

Do you suspect you react to foods? You may be sure you get symptoms after foods you use occasionally such as chocolate or red wine, but wonder if other foods may matter, as your symptoms still continue, and they may get better or worse even with no noticeable change in your usual intake. You know other people do not feel the way you do.The right diet is in the person not in the diagnosisWhen a diet is named, such as the ‘migraine diet’ it gives the impression that the correct diet is known and … [Read more...]

Diet can aggravate behaviour and learning problems

November 7, 2020 by Joan Breakey   Blog

When children are experiencing behaviour and learning problems, it’s worth considering whether diet is playing a role.  The following interesting results were found in a study looking at the effect of a low additive, low salicylate diet in the treatment of behaviour and learning problems in children.Information from 500 children using diet was collected over five years in the 1980’s.Some improved so much they became just like children are generally. Some improved a useful amount but were … [Read more...]
